TAMBLANG SACRED MOUNTAINS SPRINGS PROJECT
Protection of Tamblang Twin Sacred Mountain Springs. A Small scale model project for planting a combination of domestic rainforest trees and coffee to conserve sources of waters and endanger species of domestic trees. Prepared by Drs. I Nyoman Bagiarta, revised on April 2008
Vision:
Water is one of the biggest element of nature and of the human body. It has also has a very important function and role in the community especially at our daily culture activities and ritual which is considered as holy water. Balinese people believe that water is sacred and they are called God of Wisnu. Two scientist : Mr. Masaro Emoto ( Japan ) and F. Batmang Helidj M.D ( USA ) have reported that water is used for treating as medicine for a number of sickness. However no doubt that water is our needs for maintaining the human live and all creatures living on earth. On the country, especially at developing countries most of people are indifferent and practicing bad habit polluting, the sources of water such as, lakes, river, spring and rain forest.
Mission:
All the above habit of people must be changed and provided them a small concrete sample which can be observed, for being able to be copied by them. Nowdays, it is difficult to advise people to do a good thing, because they have been observing at all level, a deviation between what many leaders are saying and doing. A small project for establishing a new system of farming for which the people will get benefit economically on the hand the environment can be conserved and protected. Due to the economic pressure nowdays, farmers at mountain areas have been transferring the function of their land from horticulture (coffee, chocolate) to flower or vegetables etc. They need quick production to be sold out to the market without thinking any risk in the long run. They do not have any ideas or alternatives because their average of education are very low and no guidance from the government. Therefore establishing a model of mixing farming with the portion between 20% rain forest trees, 40% coffee and about 40% crops or flowers will be close to their daily economic needs, The Condition of Bali forest and water resources. Bali is a small island about 5600 square kilometer, its population 3.150.000 ( year 2000 ), and it is estimated to become 3.860.000 in 2010, plus visitors ( tourist ) every year will be increasing up to 6000.000 in 2010. Bali is the most fortune island because it has 4 lakes, such as Batur ( 15,9 sq km, depth ), Beratan ( 3,8 sq km depth 24 m ), Buyan ( 3,9 sq km depth 69 m ), Tamblingan ( 1,3 sq km depth 40.5 m ). It was found from 1996 to 2005, those lake under process of silting up from 4 – 7 meters. More over it was found, the level of water has been discending 2 meter until 7 meter, at period of 2002-2006 On the year 1998, the island had forest about 127.271 HA. It is about 22.59% from the size of the island. It is a big question, weather that volume of forest nowadays is still the same size as we had before.
There are a number of indications will approve that the above data of forest is not correct now. It was reported by Sarad Magazine ( 2005 ).That only 56% of the above volume of forest has hydrology function. About 5000 HA of forest was bared additionally about 138.910 HA holticulture & forest are critically in bad condition. The volume of water in all lakes in Bali have been decreasing. A number of natural springs have been disappearing ( especially at the hill area around Tamblingan Lake . Formerly they were about 30 to become about 12 nowadays. Drastic changing of farming from horticulture to become crops or flowers/vegetables. Case of Munduk Village , at all along the hill on the left side of Tamblingan Lake (about 7x 4 km) has drastically changed to become flowers farming. Almost all rivers in Bali especially at dry season ( June – October ) with little flow of waters and almost without water. Many rice field compound at many places in Bali have to cue to get water, many farmers family could planting paddy at rainy season only. At some villages and settlements it has been happening many times a conflict among the farmers or villagers for controlling the source of water. Ratio of drinking water services to the community, it is still low between 20 up to 70 %.JICA(Japan International Cooperation Agency), reporting that water consumption in Bali about 60 liter per day per person but WHO provide a standard of 150 liters per person per day. Star Hotel consuming water per day/ per person about 3 m3 and Jasmine hotel about 1.2 m3/per day/per person.
Therefore the above information have approved that in Bali is already lack of water both for drinking and irrigation. More over the problem of water will be more serious because the growth of population and drastic declining of the forest to catch the rainfall at mountain areas. I believe that everybody has a moral obligation to participate for conserving tropical rain forest and source of water for saving human live and all creatures living on earth.
The embryo of the project
The project was started, at 2004 by establishing our embryo project for 4 HA, from which ,we will start to motivate our neighbor farmers to follow our idea to conserve source of water The save water project is a land based conservation project at Tamblang settlement near Munduk Buleleng Bali . this mountain region has suffered environmentally through over Cultivation particularly of clove and coffee .Deforestation and subsequent planting of shallow rooted vegetables and flowers on mountain ridge has led erosion and decreased availability of water. The safe water project seek to counter these trends and be a focuses on 3 main areas : reforestation of native trees ,water conservation ,and environmentally sound coffee farming. The land is 4 hectare in the hill above Munduk village ,it has 2 cold water spring which provide drinking and irrigation water for several village below, Preserving these sacred spring to ensure long term water security is of primary importance to the project. The safe water project is seeking support for its on going effort as well as broadening its endeavors. Visitor are welcome including for overnight stay. This is wonderful way to get to know the land and its people and experience life in a beautiful forest setting while contributing to the project
